Antimitotic terpenoid compounds including sarcodictyin A and diterpenes such as eleutherobin may be obtained from organisms of the order Gorgonacea. Methods of obtaining or preparing such compounds are provided, as are novel antimitotic diterpene compounds having formula (I).
