APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR SENSING A SUBSTANCE ON A LIQUID SURFACE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A sensing element is embedded in an absorbent material having a substantial affinity for the substance to be sensed and a relatively low affinity for the liquid. A measurable quantity of the substance is concentrated in proximity to the sensing element and by accurately positioning the sensing element in the material the thickness of the substance on the liquid surface is determinable.
