An ignitable material (26) is positioned in contact with a slag (8) contained in a plasma arc treatment system having an electrode (10) and an electrical ground (14). The slag is initially at a temperature below a conducting temperature at which the slag will conduct electricity between the electrode and the grounding network. The ignitable material has a self-sustaining reaction which releases heat energy upon ignition. The ignitable material is ignited with a pilot arc (28) thereby heating at least a portion of the slag to the conducting temperature so that an arc between the electrode and the grounding network can be sustained.
Un matériau (26) inflammable est placé en contact avec un laitier (8) contenu dans un système de traitement par arc au plasma doté d'une électrode (10) et d'une mise à la terre électrique (14). Le laitier se trouve initialement à une température inférieure à une température de conduction à laquelle le laitier conduira de l'électricité entre l'électrode et le réseau de mise à la terre. Le matériau inflammable présente une réaction auto-entretenue qui libère de l'énergie à l'allumage. Le matériau inflammable est allumé avec un arc pilote (28), chauffant ainsi au moins une partie du laitier jusqu'à la température de conduction si bien qu'un arc peut être maintenu entre l'électrode et le réseau de mise à la terre.
