Apparatus (10) and a method for vitrifying hazardous waste includes a melting vessel (12) into which hazardous waste is introduced for heating by a heater (38), and a metallic containment vessel (46) of the apparatus receives the melting vessel so as to receive and contain any material that exits the melting vessel upon failure. Failure of the melting vessel (12) is detected by a sensor (43). A stirrer (39) mixes the material (18) during the heating. The containment vessel (46) is preferably hermetically scaled around the melting vessel (12) to contain gases and any melted material received from the failed melting vessel (12). The sensing of the failure is by a pressure change in the hermetically sealed chamber (58) or sensing of the presence of material received by the containment vessel (45) from the failed melting vessel (12) by electrical circuit type detection.

L'invention concerne un appareil (10) et un procédé de vitrification de déchets dangereux comprenant une cuve de fusion (12) dans laquelle on introduit des déchets dangereux afin de les chauffer à l'aide d'un élément chauffant (38). Un récipient de confinement métallique (46) dans l'appareil reçoit la cuve de fusion de façon à recevoir et retenir, lors d'une défaillance, toute matière sortant de la cuve de fusion. Toute défaillance de la cuve de fusion (12) est détectée par un capteur (48). Un agitateur (39) mélange la matière (18) lors du chauffage. De préférence, le récipient de confinement (46) entoure hermétiquement la cuve de fusion (12) afin de retenir les gaz ainsi que toute matière en fusion provenant de la cuve de fusion défaillante (12). Une variation de la pression dans la chambre (58) fermée hermétiquement ou bien la détection, grâce à un circuit électrique par exemple, de la présence de matière reçue par le récipient de confinement (46) et provenant de la cuve en fusion défaillante (12), permet de détecter la défaillance.
