ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to an apparatus and method of reducing the bit rate of PCM speech in a multiplexed voice-channel system; for each of the M time-division-multiplexed channels it reduces the bit rate from the (original) 8 bits/sample PCM represen- tation into a f bits (per sample representation where f = 6,5,4 or 3); at the receiving end the device is used in its rate expansion function to retrieve the PCM repre- sentation with 8 bits per sample.
