Case 1391 Abstract of the Disclosure Improved apparatus for imparting visual surface effects to a relatively moving substrate material by appli- cation of discrete streams of heated pressurized fluid, such as air, to surface areas of the material. An elongate manifold assembly, comprising a pair of elongate manifold housings and a plurality of spaced, parallel fluid stream discharge channels, is disposed across the substrate path. The manifold housings, coupled in fluid tight relation, are constructed and arranged so that any distortion of the manifold assembly caused by differential thermal expansion is resolved to minimize displacement of the manifold to- ward or away from the substrate. Pressurized cool fluid, such as air, is directed into selected manifold discharge channels to block selectively the passage of pressurized heated air therethrough. The manifold is provided with heated air outlets which communicate by passageways with the manifold compartment to continuously bleed off heated air from the manifold, thereby counteracting localized cooling of the manifold adjacent the discharge channels and reducing pressure build up within the manifold when selected of the channels are blocked with the cool air.
