An automatic sample testing machine for testing samples stored in test cards. The machine has a test sample positioning system for moving a tray containing a plurality of test sample cards and fluid receptacles among various stations in the machine. The machine has a diluting station for adding a predetermined quantity of diluent to the receptacles as needed. A pipetting station transfers fluid from one receptacle to another. A vacuum station is provided having a vacuum chamber moveable relative to the tray between upper and lower positions. The chamber cooperates with the tray to make a sealing engagement with the top surface of the tray when it is lowered to the lower position. A vacuum generator supplies vacuum to the chamber. When the vacuum is released from the chamber, the fluid samples are loaded into the cards from the receptacles. The test sample positioning system moves the tray to a cutting and sealing station and then to an incubation station and loads the cards one at a time into a carousel within the incubation station. A test card transport station transports the test cards from the incubation station to an optical reading station, where optical measurements (e.g. transmittance and/or fluorescence optical testing) is conducted on the wells of the card. When the card has been read, it is either moved back to the incubation station for additional incubation and reading or transferred to a stacking card disposal system when the reading is complete.

La machine est munie d'un système de positionnement des échantillons pour déplacer un plateau contenant de nombreuses cartes d'échantillons et de contenants de liquide parmi les différents postes de la machine. La machine a un poste de dilution pour ajouter au besoin une quantité déterminée de diluant aux contenants. Un poste de pipetage transfère le liquide d'un contenant à un autre. Un poste de vide est fourni possédant une chambre à vide mobile par rapport au plateau entre des positions supérieure et inférieure. La chambre coopère avec le plateau pour sceller la surface supérieure du plateau lorsqu'il est abaissé à la position inférieure. Un générateur de vide fournit le vide à la chambre. Lorsque le vide est libéré de la chambre, les échantillons de liquide sont chargés dans les cartes à partir des récipients. Le système de positionnement des échantillons déplace le plateau vers un poste de coupage et de scellage et ensuite vers un poste d'incubation et charge les cartes une à la fois dans un carroussel situé à l'intérieur du poste d'incubation. Un poste de transport des cartes d'essai transporte les cartes d'essai du poste d'incubation à un poste de densitométrie, où les mesures optiques (p. ex. l'examen optique par la transmittance et/ou par la fluorescence) sont effectuées sur les puits de la carte. Lorsque la carte a été lue, elle est soit retournée vers le poste d'incubation pour une période d'incubation et une lecture additionnelles ou transférée vers un système d'élimination des cartes lorsque la lecture est terminée.
