The invention relates to a bending machine for flat material, comprising a lower and an upper cheek with which the flat material can be fixed and a lower and upper bending tool unit. According to the invention the bending tool not required for bending the flat material can be moved into a resting position and in the bending tool unit the clamping plane, the bending tool in the resting position and the bending tool holder delimit a bending space which is free of bending machine elements and which extends in an angular range of at least 100~ around the bending edge active at a given moment.
