Bioerodible poly(ortho esters) useful as orthopedic implants or vehicles for the sustained delivery of pharmaceutical, cosmetic and agricultural agents contain amine functionalities and .alpha.-hydroxy acid-containing groups. Block copolymers contain these bioerodible poly (ortho esters). These block copolymers have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic blocks. They form micelles in aqueous solution, making them suitable for encpasulation or solubilization of hydrophobic or water-insoluble materials; and they also form bioerodible matrices for the sustained release of active agents.

L'invention concerne des poly (ortho esters) bioérodables servant d'excipients ou d'implants orthopédiques pour l'administration prolongée d'agents pharmaceutiques, cosmétiques et agricoles, et comportant des fonctions amine ainsi que des groupes comprenant de l'acide .alpha.-hydroxy. L'invention se rapporte en outre à des copolymères en bloc contenant ces poly (ortho esters) bioérodables. Lesdits copolymères en bloc comportent à la fois des blocs hydrophiles et des blocs hydrophobes. Ils forment des micelles en solution aqueuse, et se prêtent de ce fait à l'encapsulation ou à la solubilisation de matières hydrophobes ou hydro-insolubles. De plus, ils constituent des matrices bioérodables conçues pour la libération prolongée d'agents actifs.
