A safety cabinet includes a housing that defines a workspace with an access opening, an air inlet, an outlet and a passageway that directs air, air borne materials and other gases from the outlet to the inlet. A filter member filters the air and materials that flow from the outlet to the inlet; and a fan induces the flow through the passageway. A main segment of the passageway extends around a final segment of the passageway to prevent unfiltered air from leaking back into the workspace. The outlet of the workspace lies below the access opening so that material flowing out of the workspace does not move over the hands of an individual reaching into the workspace.
