BOD of a solution containing organic compounds is measured by immersing in the solution a BOD sensor which comprises a working electrode having an electrode made of metal or carbon and a membrane containing a microorganism cells which membrane is in contact with the electrode, a counter electrode and, if required, a reference electrode, and measuring a current that flows between the working electrode and the counter electrode or the reference electrode when a potential difference is applied therebetween. By this method can be measured the concentration of the organic compounds directly without the use of an oxygen electrode and even with a small amount of dissolved oxygen.

Le dispositif comporte une électrode en métal ou en carbone, une électrode de service (20) en contact avec cette électrode ainsi qu'une pellicule fine contenant des germes micro-organiques, une électrode de compteur (7) et une électrode de référence (5) si besoin est, le tout plongé dans une solution (30) contenant un organisme. La mesure de demande biochimique d'oxygène est déterminée par l'intensité électrique entre l'électrode de service (20) et l'électrode de compteur (7) ou l'électrode de référence (5) lorsqu'on applique une tension électrique entre les électrodes au moyen d'un régulateur potentiométrique (6). Ce procédé permet ainsi de mesurer les concentrations de composés organiques, directement sans utiliser d'électrode à oxygène, même lorsque la quantité d'oxygène dissoute est minime.
