A composite tape structure having a metal tape layer and a layer of swellable water blocking material, the two layers bonded together face-to-face. The tape structure is for use as a composite shield and water blocking structure surrounding the core of a cable, preferably a telecommunications cable. One edge region of the metal tape layer may extend beyond the layer of water blocking material so that overlapping edges of the metal tape layer confront each other for bonding purposes when used as a shield. The layer of water blocking material may be formed from tape impregnated with or provided with a particulate swellable material, or the particulate material may be applied directly to and bonded to the metal tape layer.
On présente une structure pour un ruban hétérogène composé d'un ruban métallique formant une première couche, recouverte d'une couche d'un matériau imperméable qui peut prendre de l'expansion. Les deux couches sont apposées l'une sur l'autre. Le ruban hétérogène peut servir à isoler le coeur d'un câble, particulièrement aux fins de télécommunications, et à le protéger d'infiltrations d'eau. L'un des rebords du ruban métallique peut être dénudé de matériau imperméable, de façon que la superposition des rebords du ruban métallique mène à un contact très fin et à une bonne protection. La couche de matériau imperméable peut être produite à partir d'un ruban imbibé ou pourvu d'un matériau à base de particules, et pouvant prendre de l'expansion, ou encore être produite en déposant le matériau à base de particules directement sur le ruban métallique, et en l'y faisant adhérer.
