ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the preparation of calcium ammonium lactate in solid, crystalline form which comprises reacting lactic acid with ammonia in the presence of a calcium compound and isolating the desired product. The calcium compound may be a salt with a strong mineral acid. It may also be an alkaline salt, and used with a strong mineral acid The process produces the novel compound calcium ammonium lactate in pure form. The product is useful as a feed for ruminant animals which may also contain forage, roughage or other plant products which become incorporated in the solidified product.
