A chipping head assembly has a chipping head, a motor, and a drive line cooperating between the motor and the chipping head, so as to rotatably drive the chipping head. The motor is fixedly mounted so that it does not translate with the chipping head, the chipping head being selectively actuable so as to selectively translate across a workpiece feed path as a workpiece is translated linearly along the feed path so as to engage the workpiece. The drive line includes a slip joint allowing for relative movement between the motor and the chipping head, the chipping head is selectively translated across the feed path, leaving the motor remaining stationary.
