A new patterning technique, known as Strategic Geometry Isolation (SGI), is used to pattern conductive film structures using laser ablation. In addition to ITO films, SGI may also be used to pattern any other conductive film amenable to ablation with a laser or other directed energy beam. Instead of ablating large areas of ITO to create an ITO void through which underlying layers in a MIPC can project a capacitive field, the SGI patterning technique involves leaving in place, but electrically isolating, the areas that would have been ablated. The electrical isolation of these areas may be accomplished with a single pass of the ablation path. In use, the electrically isolated areas behave similarly to the ITO voids/ablated areas, allowing the underlying capacitive field to project through them. The coupling provided by the electrically isolated areas for the combined layers enhances the capacitive field of the underlying layers.

L'invention concerne une nouvelle technique de gravure appelée isolation géométrique stratégique (SGI) utilisée pour la gravure de structures de films conducteurs par ablation au laser. La technique SGI peut être utilisée, outre pour les films ITO, pour la gravure de tout autre film conducteur pouvant être soumis à une ablation avec un laser ou un autre faisceau d'énergie dirigé. Au lieu d'enlever de grandes zones d'ITO pour créer un vide ITO au travers duquel les couches sous-jacentes d'un MIPC peuvent projeter un champ capacitif, la technique de gravure SGI consiste à laisser en place, mais en les isolant électriquement, les zones qui auraient été enlevées. L'isolation électrique de ces zones peut être effectuée en un seul passage sur le trajet d'ablation. En utilisation, les zones isolées électriquement se comportent comme des vides ITO ou des zones enlevées, et laissent le champ capacitif les traverser. Le couplage assuré par les zones isolées électriquement pour les couches combinées améliore le champ capacitif des couches sous-jacentes.
