Combining an electroosmosis direct current (EP) applied at less than 1mA/Mcm3 with an anode (8) placed adjacent an outer surface of reinforced concrete (1) soaked with a substantially neutral saline solution, effectively depletes corrosive anions in the concrete even when the direct current is in the range from 0.01 mA to less than 1mA and at a voltage less than 100 V. Further, using such electroosmotic treatment as a first treatment, and promptly following it with cathodic protection, it is found that current density of CP required for cathodic protection is unexpectedly reduced and when coupled with low installation and operational costs of the novel system, improvement in the efficiency of a conventional cathodic protection system is found to be by a factor of 3 to 30 times. Both processes may be operated together without one circuit interfering with the other.

L'invention concerne la combinaison d'un courant direct d'électro-osmose (EP) appliqué à moins de 1mA/Mcm?3¿ par une anode (8) adjacente à une surface externe de béton renforcé (1) enduite d'une solution saline quasiment neutre, qui réduit efficacement les anions corrosifs présents dans le béton, même lorsque le courant direct est compris dans une gamme entre 0,01 mA à moins de 1mA et à une tension inférieure à 100 V. De plus, si on utilise un tel traitement électro-osmotique en premier lieu, puis on le fait rapidement suivre par une protection cathodique, on remarque que la densité de courant cathodique imprimé (CP) requise pour la protection cathodique est réduite de manière surprenante et lorsqu'elle est associée à de faibles coûts d'installation et de fonctionnement du nouveau système, on note une amélioration de l'efficacité d'un système de protection cathodique classique dans un ordre de grandeur compris entre 3 et 30 fois. Les deux procédés peuvent être appliqués ensemble sans qu'un circuit ne cause d'interférences avec l'autre.
