Starch is cationically modified by reacting starch with polymers which contain amino and/or ammonium groups in an aqueous medium at from 115 to 180°C under superatmospheric pressure in the absence of oxidizing agents, polymerization initiators and alkali, by a process in which the reaction is carried out in a manner such that a reduction in molecular weight occurs in not more than 10% by weight of the starch, and the reaction products thus obtainable are used as dry strength agents for paper.

Selon un procédé de modification cationique d'amidon, on fait réagir l'amidon avec des polymères qui contiennent des groupes amino et/ou ammonium dans un milieu aqueux à des températures comprises entre 115 et 180 DEG C sous une pression accrue, en l'absence d'oxydants, d'initiateurs de la polymérisation, et d'alcali. On conduit la réaction de sorte qu'au maximum 10% en poids de l'amidon subisse une réduction de son poids molaire. L'invention concerne également l'utilisation des produits de réaction ainsi obtenus comme agents de résistance à l'état sec du papier.
