The invention relates to a clip for surgical purposes, made from bendable wire-like material. Conventional clips have an essentially rectilinear base from each end of which a limb projects. Upon application in endoscopic operations, i.e. when the clips are pushed forward through trocar cannulae, it is disadvantageous that the rectilinear base can only be so long that it can be pushed forward transversely through a trocar cannula. As a result, only small clips have been usable thus far with pre-set trocar diameters. According to the invention, a clip is so designed that the base is shaped bent backwards, starting from its centre section, on both sides, opposite to the direction of the limbs (42, 44), so far that the ends (12, 14) of the base touch or come close to each other, base (10) and limbs (42, 44) forming an essentially .OMEGA.-shaped contour, The bent-back configuration effects a substantial reduction in the lateral extension of the clip when it is pushed forward through the trocar cannula, so that endoscopically larger clips than usual can be set with a suitable clip setter.
