A coin sorter for sorting a plurality of coins of mixed denominations comprises a coin-driving member having a resilient surface, and a stationary coin-guiding member having a coin-guiding surface opposing said resilient surface of said coin- driving member. The coin-guiding surface is positioned generally parallel to the resilient surface, and defines a coin path along which coins are guided; the resilient surface of the coin-driving member moving the coins along the coin path of the coin-guiding member. A plurality of exit stations are formed on the coin-guiding member for selectively allowing exiting of the coins based upon their respective diameters; the plurality of exit stations being along an end portion of the coin path, each exit station including an exit channel. An entry channel formed on the coin-guiding member receives coins; the entry channel being positioned along a beginning portion of the coin path. A stripping notch can be formed on coin-guiding member, extending across the entry channel for stripping stacked ones of the plurality of coins. The coin sorter also can include means for increasing positive control over coins adjacent to a periphery of the coin- guiding member in at least one of the plurality of exit channels; the positive control over coins increasing toward the periphery of the coin-guiding member. Preferably, the control-increasing means includes a pressure ramp.
