56,410 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A system for detecting combustor degradation in a combustion turbine engine includes one or more optical detectors disposed externally to the combustor to detect optical emanations from the combustor. The optical image(s) is (are) converted to an electrical signal and compared with a normal or "reference" image. The image(s) may also be displayed on a video monitor. Based on the comparison, an operator may be alerted of possible damage to the combustor.
