A compact, tunable, wavelength independent, all-fiber attenuator is produced by heating a single-mode fiber to create at least one taper therein through capillarity rather than through pulling, pushing or twisting the fiber. The attenuator may be tuned to achieve the desired value of attenuation and wavelength independence by imparting a small bend to the taper. The attenuator may be a fixed value attenuator or a variable attenuator. When a fixed value attenuator is desired, the tapered and bent structure is encapsulated in an adhesive and glued onto a substrate.

Cette invention concerne un atténuateur compact tout-fibre, accordable à large bande obtenu par chauffage d'une fibre monomode pour créer au moins un amincissement par capillarité plutôt que par traction, poussée ou vrillage de la fibre. L'atténuateur peut être accordé selon le degré d'atténuation à réaliser et l'insensibilité voulue à la longueur d'onde en fléchissant légèrement la partie à diamètre dégressif. On peut réaliser ainsi un atténuateur fixe ou variable. Pour réaliser un atténuateur fixe, on doit encapsuler sous adhésif la partie à diamètre dégressif pliée et la coller à un substrat.
