A connector 10 for optical fibers includes a cylindrical glass ferrule 140 installed in a plastic base member 150 to form a fiber-holding structure. This structure includes a small passageway 141 along its central axis 50-50 for holding an optical fiber, and is mounted within a dielectric housing 110 that includes an opening 111 at one end thereof from which the glass ferrule protrudes. A cylindrical spring 160 surrounds the base member and interacts with an interior surface of the housing to urge the glass ferrule outward from the opening in the housing. The housing further includes a spring latch 120 which is located on a single side surface thereof, which is manually operable and used to lock the connector to an associated receptacle 40.
