ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE One or more semiconductor valves cnpable of blocking current in the reverse direction each have a parallel damping circuit which includes a relief branch comprising a relief capacitor and a diode with a shunt resistor to limit positive overvoltages. During the decommutation of the current through the relief branch, a reverse current forms which can increase steeply and can lead to dangerous negative overvoltages. To relieve the valve of these overvoltages, an auxiliary capacitor is coupled in parallel to the diode. Also, a saturable reactor Lk with a shunt resistor Rk is arranged in series with the semiconductor valve or valves.
