ABSTRACT The present application relates to transporting data between digital computers by the use of a transcription computer that transports data from a source computer to a target computer. A virtual terminal, which is a video terminal connected to the transcription computer, is used to virtually interact with the source computer and the target computer as their terminals at the application level, in that, the virtual terminal communicates and interacts with application programs of either the source or target computer. By the use of a general purpose program stored and exe- cuted in the transcription computer, sequential data fields of sequential records of a data base of the application program of the source computer are automatically read from the source computer and stored in the trans- cription computer. The data fields read are mapped to expected prompts of the application programs of the target computer. As the target computer prompts, the transcription computer sequentially responds so as to auto- matically load the data of data fields of the records of the data base of the application program of the source computer into sequential data fields of sequential records of a data base of an application program of the target computer thereby automatically transferring data under a general purpose program notwithstanding differences in source computer architecture, target computer architecture, communications protocol and data base format.
