The present invention relates to a deflecting base for use with a standard which fixes the standard to a supporting surface yet allows the standard to pivot when subjected to a threshold force thereby preventing damage to the standard. The deflecting base rights and centers itself and the standard when the cause of the deflecting force is removed. The deflecting base may be added to any appropriate standard, particularly sign standards and gates.
