Abstract The invention relates to a multi-phase PSK demodulator. It includes a quadrature detector for demodulating a PSK signal in response to a carrier wave to provide demodulated analog signals. A converter is provided for converting the demodulated analog signals to digital signals. A synchronization decision circuit responsive to the digital signals decides whether or not synchroni- zation is established and provides a first control signal. A carrier recovery circuit, including a voltage controlled oscillator provides an error voltage in response to the digital signals. The voltage controlled oscillator provides the carrier wave in response to the error voltage. A false synchronization detector detects a false synchronization by monitoring the error voltage, thereby providing a second control signal. Finally, a sweep controller is provided for supplying a sweep signal or a predetermined level signal to the input of the voltage controlled oscillator in res- ponse to the first and second control signals. The invention is capable of cancelling false synchronization when it occurs.
