Abstract 1. Device and forming finger for forming a mouth area on a glass vial and process for forming the glass vial. 2.1 In the usual vial machines a single forming finger is allocated to the forming rollers, which form the mouth of the vial. Such a forming finger is subjected to a great wear, by which the mouth profile of a vial is changed in the course of a series. With the new process and the new forming finger the wear is to be reduced to a minimum so that better production tolerances for the formed mouth become possible. 2.2 This is achieved by its own forming finger being allocated either to each glass tube of a vial machine or a certain play is given to the forming finger or the forming finger is produced with lateral recesses, and a ratio of the cross- sectional surface to the circular segment area of the forming finger of larger than or equal to 0.55 x r is maintained. 2.3 These forming fingers are used in all vial machines, in which from many glass tubes in a cycle step by step vials are produced by rolling and melting the tube pieces.
