ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A discharge tube has an activated layer, made of one of an alkali metal compound or an alkaline earth metal compound, formed on a surface other than a dis- charge surface of one of a pair of opposed electrodes in the tube. The electrodes are hermetically sealed to a cylindrical cover, and a gas, preferably an inert gas such as argon, fills the hermetically-sealed enclosure.
