A hydraulic control device (10) which may be used in a number of applications, including with a fuel injector (8), includes a control valve having a first (14) and a second (16) independently shiftable valve members, the control valve (202) being configurable to shift the valve members (14, 16) to define a plurality of actuating fluid flow paths for controlling hydraulic flow therethrough. A fuel injector (8) includes the aforementioned control valve (10). A method of hydraulic control includes a number of steps, including independently controlling the shifting of two valves (14, 16) in a control valve assembly (10) to selectively control the flow of actuating fluid to an actuator (236).
