A dynamic self-configuring system (110) for collecting metering data comprises a collector meter (116) (Fig.1). The collector meter (116) scans for meters that are operable to directly communicate with the collector and registers such meters as level one meters (114a). The collector meter (116) transmits instructions to the level one meters (114a) to scan for meters that are operable to directly communicate with the level one meters (114a). The collector meter (116) registers meters that respond as level two meters (114b).

Ledit compteur collecteur effectue un balayage des compteurs afin de d~terminer quels sont ceux qui peuvent fonctionner de mani­re ~ communiquer directement avec le collecteur et il enregistre ces compteurs comme ~tant des compteurs de niveau 1. Le collecteur transmet des instructions aux compteurs de niveau 1 aux fins de la recherche par balayage de compteurs qui peuvent fonctionner de mani­re ~ communiquer directement avec les compteurs de niveau 1. Le collecteur enregistre les compteurs qui r~pondent comme ~tant des compteurs de niveau 2.
