ABSTRACT An electron gun system according to the invention comprises a cathode and electron gun for developing an electron beam. A main focus lens, which has a plurality of electrodes situated on a common axis, provides for receiving the electron beam and forming a focused electron beam spot at the screen of the tube. A power supply circuit is provided for developing and applying to the electrodes potentials effective to form one or more focusing field components between the electrodes, the main focus lens means and power supply potentials being such that the field components are discrete and independent for each of the three beams. The lens is so structured and arranged as to cause to be formed between adjacent electrodes at least one focusing field component which is asymmetrical and effective to significantly divert a passed beam from a straight-line path through a predetermined angle. A first of the plurality of electrodes comprises a focus electrode adapted to receive focus voltages for establishing the focal distance of the beams. A second of the plurality of electrodes cooperates with another of the plurality of electrodes to form the asymmetrical field component. Electrical control circuits according to the invention provide for developing and applying a varying voltage to the second electrode to cause the strength of the asymmetric field component, and thus the angle by which the beam is diverted, to vary in response to the varying voltage.
