The present invention relates to novel electroactive energy storing polycarbon sulfide (PCS) materials of general formula: (CSx)n wherein x is greater than 2.3 to about 50, and n is equal to or greater than 2. This invention also relates to novel rechargeable electrochemical cells containing positive electrode materials comprised of said polycarbon-sulfide materials with improved storage capacity at ambient and sub-ambient temperatures. This invention also relates to novel gel type solid electrolytes useful in high energy storages batteries.

L'invention concerne un nouveau poly(sulfure de carbone) électroactif permettant d'emmagasiner de l'énergie et répondant à la formule générale: (CS¿x?)¿n?, où x est compris dans la plage allant de 2,3 à 50 environ et n est égal ou supérieur à 2. Cette invention concerne également de nouvelles cellules électrochimiques rechargeables contenant des composés pour électrode positive constitués de ces poly(sulfure de carbone) et ayant une capacité d'emmagasinage améliorée aux températures ambiantes et à des températures plus basses. Cette invention concerne également de nouveaux électrolytes solides du type gel, utiles pour les piles électriques à haute capacité d'emmagasinage.
