Abstract of the Disclosure Novel means are provided to prevent atmospheric oxidation of sulphide tailings with resultant acid generation, that is generally considered to be responsible for acid mine drainage. The means include electrochemical protection for preventing atmospheric oxidation of sulphide tailings. Such electrochemical protection includes anode and cathode compartments separated by a suitable diaphragm, and filled with an electrolyte solution. A bed of sulphide tailings to be protected and a graphite cloth as a feeder electrode and used as a cathode are provided in the cathode compartment. A graphite rod used as an anode is provided in the anode compartment. A standard reference electrode, e.g. a saturated calomel electrode, is disposed in the electrolyte solution adjacent to the bed of tailings in the cathode compartment. A constant power source interconnects the anode and the cathode, e.g. a potentiostat connected to the anode, to the cathode and to the reference electrode. Several configurations of this arrangement are possible, including a large scale version. Means are also provided by similar arrangements for growing a protective oxide film on sulphide tailings, and also to provide an adherent, stable, inert, coating of asphalt on sulphide tailings to prevent atmospheric oxidation and hence acid mine drainage.
