Disclosed is an electrode catalyst for fuel cells having high cell output and high fuel efficiency, wherein activation of a catalyst, which is composed of an alloy of platinum and cobalt, is improved. Also disclosed is a method for producing such an electrode catalyst. Specifically disclosed is an electrode catalyst for fuel cells wherein catalyst particles composed of platinum and cobalt are loaded on a conductive carrier. This electrode catalyst is characterized in that the catalyst particles have a composition (molar) ratio of platinum:cobalt = 3:1-5:1. A high cell voltage can be obtained when the ratio of platinum to cobalt is within the range from 3:1 to 5:1. When the ratio of platinum to cobalt is less than 3:1, the amount of cobalt dissolved from the catalyst is increased. When the ratio of platinum to cobalt is more than 5:1, the catalyst activity is decreased.

L'invention concerne un catalyseur d'électrode pour piles à combustible dotées d'une puissance et d'un rendement énergétique élevés, dans lequel l'activation d'un catalyseur composé d'un alliage de platine et de cobalt est améliorée. L'invention concerne également un procédé de fabrication d'un tel catalyseur d'électrode. L'invention concerne spécifiquement un catalyseur d'électrode pour piles à combustible dans lequel des particules de catalyseur composées de platine et de cobalt sont chargées sur un support conducteur. Ce catalyseur d'électrode se caractérise en ce que les particules de catalyseur présentent un rapport de composition (molaire) platine/cobalt de 3:1-5:1. Une tension de pile élevée peut être obtenue si le rapport entre platine et cobalt se situe dans la gamme de 3:1 à 5:1. Si le rapport entre platine et cobalt est inférieur à 3:1, la quantité de cobalt dissoute à partir du catalyseur augmente. Si le rapport entre platine et cobalt est supérieur à 5:1, l'activité du catalyseur est réduite.
