The present invention generally relates to magnetic devices used in memory and information processing applications, such as giant magneto-resistance (GMR) devices and tunneling magneto-resistance devices. More specifically, the present invention is directed to a single ferromagnetic layer device in which an electrical current is used to control and change magnetic configurations as well as induce high frequency magnetization dynamics. The magnetic layer includes full spin-polarized magnetic material, which may also have non¬ uniform magnetization. The non-uniform magnetization is achieved by varying the shape or roughness of the magnetic material. The present invention may be used in memory cells, as well as high frequency electronics, such as compact microwave sources, detectors, mixers and phase shifters.

De manière générale, l'invention concerne des dispositifs magnétiques utilisés dans des applications de traitement de mémoire et d'informations, tels que des dispositifs à magnétorésistance géante (GMR) et des dispositifs à magnétorésistance à effet tunnel. De manière plus spécifique, l'invention concerne un dispositif à couche ferromagnétique unique dans lequel un courant magnétique est utilisé pour commander et changer les configurations magnétiques ainsi qu'induire des dynamiques d'aimantation haute fréquence. La couche magnétique comporte un matériau magnétique entièrement polarisé en spin, qui peut aussi avoir une aimantation non uniforme. L'aimantation non uniforme est obtenue en faisant varier la forme ou la rugosité du matériau magnétique. L'invention peut être utilisée dans des cellules de mémoire, ainsi que dans des éléments électroniques à fréquence élevée tels que des sources de micro-ondes compactes, des détecteurs, des mélangeurs et des déphaseurs.
