A method and apparatus for providing emergency information to a wireless transmit receive unit (WTRU). The WTRU is configured to receive a system information message including an emergency message notification and emergency system information messages, wherein the system information messages are segmented and overlap non-emergency system information messages or are located between non-emergency system information messages. The WTRU is further configured to process the emergency information messages.
