The present invention is directed generally to fiber reinforced polypropylene compositions, and the beneficial mechanical properties imparted by such compositions. The fiber reinforced polypropylene compositions include at least 25 wt% polypropylene based polymer, from 5 to 60 wt% organic fiber, and from O to 60 wt% inorganic filler. Lubricant may also be optionally incorporated into the composition. Articles molded from these fiber reinforced polypropylene compositions have a flexural modulus of at least 300,000 psi, and exhibit ductility during instrumented impact testing. The fiber reinforced polypropylene compositions of the present invention are particularly suitable for making molded articles including, but not limited to household appliances, automotive parts, and boat hulls.
L'invention concerne généralement des compositions de polypropylène renforcées par des fibres et les propriétés mécaniques bénéfiques conférées par lesdites compositions. Les compositions de polypropylène renforcées par des fibres comportent au moins 25 % en poids de polymère à base de polypropylène, de 5 à 60 % en poids de fibre organique, et de 0 à 60 % en poids de charge inorganique. Le lubrifiant peut éventuellement être incorporé dans la composition. Les articles moulés à partir de ces compositions de polypropylène renforcées par des fibres possèdent un module d'élasticité en flexion d'au moins 300 000 psi, et sont ductiles pendant l'essai de choc instrumenté. Les compositions de polypropylène renforcées par des fibres de l'invention conviennent particulièrement à la fabrication d'articles moulé, dont entre autres, des appareils ménagers, des pièces d'automobiles et des coques de bateau.
