A method for fiberizing molten mineral material. The method comprises the steps of melting rock to form a molten slag, causing the slag to contact at least one moving surface which is moving at a rate in the range of 125 feet/second to 250 feet/second, propelling the slag contacting the at least one moving surface into the air to form fibrous pieces, and cooling the fibrous pieces to form fibers. In a preferred embodiment, the moving surface is the outer radius of a spinning wheel which rotates such that the speed at the wheel's outer radius is 125 feet/second to 250 feet/second. Also included in the present invention is a mineral wool fiber manufactured by the method described above. The method of the invention provides a preferred fiber where the rock comprises SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, and MgO in relative amounts satisfying the ratio: Image such that the ratio is in the range of about 1.2:1 to about 1.4:1.
