A universal joint between adjacent, electrically connected instrument housings for downhole well operations allow the connected hosugings to bend longitudinally as required to traverse an arced section of a well bore but does not permit relative elongation or twisting about the longitudinal axis of the housings. I one embodiment, a fluid impermeable open passage space at atmospheric pressure surrounds electrical signal carriers linking the instrument circuitry within the two housings. The passage is constructed as a high-pressure flexible bellows or as a braided or spiral wound high-pressure fluid hose. In another embodiment, a fluid impermeable sheath surrounds the signal carriers and encapsutlates the signal carriers by a resilient solid. The articulation structure comprises a Cardan-type of universal joint wherein two fingers project longitudinally from the end of each of the housings. The fingers are meshed and pivotally joined to respective spindles projecting radially from the open center of a ring spyder. The protective bellows, hose or resilient compound filled sheath is secured at opposite ends to bore plugs in the respective instrument housings. Between the instrument housings, the hose, bellows or filled sheath passes through the open center of the spyder ring.

Un joint universel disposé entre des boîtiers d'instruments adjacents reliés électriquement pour des opérations de fond autorise une flexion longitudinale pour le passage d'une zone courbe dans un puits, mais pas d'élongation relative ou de torsion par rapport à l'axe longitudinal des boîtiers. Selon un mode de réalisation, un espace traversant imperméable aux fluides, à la pression atmosphérique, entoure les porteurs de signaux électriques qui relient les circuits d'instruments à l'intérieurs des deux boîtiers. De par sa construction, ce passage s'apparente à un soufflet élastique haute pression ou à un tube flexible haute pression à tresses ou enroulements torsadés. Selon un autre mode de réalisation, une gaine pleine et souple, imperméable aux fluides, entoure et enveloppe les porteurs de signaux. La structure d'articulation comprend un joint de Cardan dans lequel deux pattes dépassent longitudinalement des extrémités de chacun des boîtiers. Ces pattes s'emboîtent les unes dans les autres et sont montées pivotant sur des axes correspondants qui dépassent radialement du centre ouvert d'une noix de cardan. Le soufflet, tube flexible ou gaine remplie d'un matériau souple est fixé à ses extrémités dans des alésages des boîtiers d'instruments correspondants. Le soufflet, tube flexible ou gaine pleine traverse le centre ouvert de la noix de cardan entre les boîtiers d'instruments.
