ABSTRACT Existing devices for controlling flow in water and wastewater treatment systems utilize mechanical valves, adjustable height weirs and gates which are expensive to manufacture and maintain, and in some circumstances such as during winter, difficult to operate. A relatively simple substitute for such devices to control the flow from one zone or area to another includes a casing defining a weir chamber, a submerged weir in the chamber, an inlet on one side of the casing for introducing liquid into the chamber, a liquid outlet from the chamber on the other side of the weir, connected to a second zone or area at a flooded level below the liquid level in the second zone or area, and a duct in the casing for introducing gas under pressure into and out of the chamber for actively controlling the liquid level in the chamber and consequently the flow of liquid over the weir between the inlet and outlet. The use of the above described apparatus involves a novel method of controlling the flow of liquid over a weir.
