There is described a substance of the following formula, Image which is referred to as FR 901220. Also described is a process for the production of the FR901228 substance by culturing a strain belonging to the genus Chromobacterium, which is capable of producing FR901228 substance, in an aqueous nutrient medium under aerobic conditions and recovering the FR901228 substance. A biologically pure culture of Chromobacterium violaceum WB968 (FERM BP-1968) as well as a pharmaceutical composition which comprises, as an active ingredient FR901228 substance and a non-toxic, pharmaceutically acceptable carrier are also described.
