A coherent optical communications system with continuous polarization scrambling, wherein such scrambling is obtained by combining orthogonally-polarized radiations at different frequencies emitted by two independent sources in a transmitter, frequency modulated by a binary information signal. The frequency difference between the two sources for both emission conditions must be at least equal to the inverse of the bit period. The system does not require the use of devices external to source in order to obtain polarization scrambling.
