From the cells of Actinomycetes belonging to the genus Nocardia or the genus Amycolata, there is obtained a gene for expressing a hydroxylase activity capable of converting the hydrogen atom at the 25-position of a vitamin D compound having a hydrogen atom at the 25-position into a hydroxyl group. By transforming Streptomyces lividans or Streptomyces griseus with a plasmid bearing the gene and treating vitamin D compounds having a hydrogen atom at the 25-position with the transformant, vitamin D compounds introduced a hydroxyl group at the 25-position can be obtained efficiently in a high yield.
