A method of coding a set of multi-level signals that includes exhaustively comparing the set with each of a number of vectors to determine a set of difference metrics. A vector is selected that minimizes the difference metric, and a coded representation is then generated based on the selected vector. Each one of the vectors includes a geometric array of one or more elements having a respective magnitude. The metrics reflect at least two magnitudes of the elements of the geometric array. The coded representation is generated only when the differencesbetween respective pairs of magnitudes exceed corresponding threshold values. The coded representation is a null coded representation whenever the differences between respective pairs of the magnitudes do not exceed the threshold value. This technique can be used in the context of a full motion video coder based on a three-dimensional sub-band framework.
