N01-27103HM/A0 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates generally to a glass fiber forming unit and more particularly, to a novel device which manu- factures glass fibers by using centrifugal force. The device comprises a hollow spinner which has a bottom, surrounding wall in which are a number of molten glass projecting orifices and an upper annular flange. An attenuating blast furnance is provided which attenuates the formed primary filaments into secondary filaments. The invention is characterized in that only an outer cone of the flame from the jet flame orifices of the blast furnace contacts the lower portion of the outer surface of the wall of the spinner. A heating burner is provided inside the flange which jets a flame in the direction of the prolong- ation of the flange and parallel to its surface. The flame from the burner heats the spinner as it goes along at least the upper surface of the flange and the heat is transmitted to at least a corner where the flange and the wall meet. This device, when compared to the prior art, is relatively simple in con- struction, and provides glass wool fibers of good quality while using only a small amount of fuel thereby conserving energy.
