Glass-like monoliths constituted by silicon oxide and titanium oxide are prepared by means of the hydrolysis of a titanium halide, addition of the so obtained solution to silicon alkoxide, gelation of the resulting colloidal solution, drying of the consequent alcogel and end sintering. among the so-obtained glass-like monoliths, which may contain up to 60 mol % of titanium oxide, those with a content of titanium oxide higher than, or equal to, 10%, are interesting. They are characterized by a high transparency, a low coefficient of thermal expansion, and in that they are amorphous within a wide range of temperature.
