ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to the toughening of glass sheets. A glass sheet is heated and may be bent before being lowered into a chilling liquid to quench the sheet. The leading edge of the sheet which contacts the chilling liquid first is hotter than the trailing edge of the sheet and preferably a linear temperature gradient exists up the sheet. Glass sheets toughened by this method are used in the manufacture of motor vehicle and aircraft windscreens.
