The present invention relates to compounds of the formula (I), which are modulators of metalloproteinase activity. and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein W is -C(O)-, -OC(O)-, -NHC(O)-, -C(O)O-, Or -C(O)NH-; R1 is phenyl, heteroaryl, biphenyl, bicyciic aryi, tricyclic aryl, bicyclic heteroaryl. or tricyclic heteroaryl, each optionally substituted with one or more of R5 or R6, and when Ri is substituted with more than one of R5 or Re, the substituents can be identical or different; R2 is hydrogen, (C1 -C6) alkyl, (C2-C6) alkenyl, (C2-C6) alkynyl, -(CH2)nR11 , -OH, or -0-(C1-C6) alkyl; R3 is -CO2H, -CONH2, -CONHOH, -CONHSO2R7, tetrazole, -SO2NHR7, -SO3H, - PO(OH)NH2, -PO(OH)OR7, -CONHR7, -COOR7, an acid mimetic group, or a 5 or 6- membered heterocycloalkyl or heteroaryl containing 1 to 4 heteroatoms selected from O, N, S; R4 is -CO2H, -CONH2, -(CH2)nOR7, or -CONR9R10;
