A line release device for fishing downriggers which overcomes the traditional problem of small fish seizing the bait without creating sufficient pull on the line to cause it to disengage from the line holder, usually resulting in the small fish being towed and drowning and thus spoiling the action of the lure without the the fisherman being aware of it; the traditional line holding device has to be set very tight when fishing very deep because of the great drag on the fishing line; the invention allows the line holder to grip the line with great force, yet "trips" the holder when a relatively small pull is exerted on the baits so that the fisherman is instantly aware that a small fish has struck; as a side benefit, the small fish may be released while still alive, making the invention environmentally far more friendly than the known traditional devices used for the purpose.
