This invention relates to halide glasses which have particular utility as hosts for praseodymium in order to provide optical amplification by laser activity. The glasses are characterised in that die halide content is provided as a small proportion, e.g. 1-10 percent, of chloride with the remainder as fluoride. The metal content is similar to conventional ZBLAN glasses and it has been further discovered that the replacement of Al by Y and In and/or the partial replacement of Na by Cs has synergistic benefits. PR3++ constitutes a good lacing species for amplifying telecommunication signals at 1300 nm using pumped radiation at 1020 nm.

L'invention concerne des verres d'halogénure particulièrement utiles en tant qu'hôtes du praséodyme de manière à produire une amplification optique par activité laser. Lesdits verres se caractérisent par le fait que la teneur en halogénure est répartie à raison d'une faible proportion de chlorure, soit de 1 à 10 %, et le reste de fluorure. La teneur en métal est similaire à celle des verres ZBLAN. On a par ailleurs découvert que le remplacement d'Al par Y et In et/ou le remplacement partiel de Na par Cs confère des propriétés synergiques. Pr3+ constitue une bonne espèce de lasage pour l'amplification de signaux de télécommunication à 1300 nm avec un rayonnement pompé à 1020 nm.
